Take any car that runs every day, empty it out, and roughly the same twenty objects will come out. Here is the list, and above all where each of them should be.<\/p>\n

Papers and what never leaves the car<\/h2>\n

Registration document, insurance certificate, blank accident report, owner's manual, service book. They live in the glovebox and never move. A soft wallet is enough never to rummage again while an officer waits at your window.<\/p>\n

The hi-vis vest and the warning triangle are compulsory, and the vest must be reachable from the driving position<\/strong>, not in the boot: the point is to put it on before getting out of the car. Door bin or under the seat.<\/p>\n

The driver's own things<\/h2>\n

Phone, sunglasses, toll badge, change, charger, parking ticket. They share one flaw: they are small, they slide, and you look for them at exactly the wrong moment.<\/p>\n

The phone has only one acceptable place: a mount, at eye level, never on your lap nor in the centre bin where you have to look down. Sunglasses have their own holder in the roof on many cars — failing that a hard case in the door, never left on the dashboard where they get scratched and warp in the heat.<\/p>\n

For the rest, a small box in the centre bin beats the bottom of the armrest: a box can be emptied in one go.<\/p>\n

What we carry every day<\/h2>\n

Handbag, laptop bag, gym bag, shopping bag, a child's backpack. This is the category that really fills a car, and the only one whose contents change every day.<\/p>\n

It almost never has a place designed for it by the manufacturer. On the passenger seat it slides at the first braking. On the floor it gets dirty and tips over. In the boot it is out of reach and lies down.<\/p>\n

This is exactly the gap filled by a headrest hook<\/a> : the bag stays upright, against the seat back, within reach, without taking up a seat. Ten seconds to fit, no tools, no marks on the upholstery.<\/p>\n

What lies around and should not<\/h2>\n

Empty bottles, packaging, receipts, old masks, a charger that fits nothing. This is not a storage problem, it is an exit problem: nothing ever leaves the car.<\/p>\n

A rubbish bag hung in the back settles the question better than any door bin, because it is visible and comes off in one movement as you get out. A door bin hides the mess until it overflows.<\/p>\n

The emergency kit<\/h2>\n

Jump leads, a compressor, a torch, an ice scraper, a bottle of water, a blanket. All of it useful and all of it heavy: the boot, on the floor, against the rear seat backs.<\/p>\n

One exception: the ice scraper, which must be reachable from the driver's seat in winter. Under the seat, not in a frozen boot.<\/p>\n

The full clear-out, in one go<\/h2>\n

The method that works takes three passes. Empty the car completely onto a sheet or in the garage. Sort into three piles: stays, goes back in the house, goes in the bin. Put things back following one simple rule: heavy low and to the rear, useful at hand height, nothing loose on the seats<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Allow twenty minutes. It is the best return on time spent of anything you can do to a car, and it costs nothing.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
